  • Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captain, 1936, Large

    Edward Ardizzone

    Hardcover (Henry Z. Walck 1936, 1955, March 15, 1936)
1936, Oxford University Press; lithographed in the USA. Second printing--Nov. 1936. Book is square and binding is tight. Lower edge of boards show wear no more than ~.5cm in height from the lowest to the highest point. Head of spine has a small chip--does not affect binding. Hinges in excellent shape. Front lower right corner has ~1cm little triangle of paper removed from it. No DJ; HOWEVER, the inslide flap of the DJ is in tact with the original price showing. Pages are clean. No writing inside or out. Illustrations are bright and the text is uniquely pressented and printed on one side of the paper only. An extremely RARE book to find. It represents the cornerstone of children's illustrated literature. A wonderful story that Eyre calls "one of the most convincing British picture story books yet produced" (p.43). Whalley (p.188-9) notes that this was one of the first books to be printed with photolithography. (Although published both in London and New York, the entire edition was actually printed during a hot summer in New York. Due to the humidity, it had to be printed on one side only of each leaf). She adds that "it proved to be a major landmark in the history of the English picture book." This is an important children's book, scarce in any condition and seldom found in such nice condition.
